Microsuction is the gold standard technique for removing ear wax from the ear canal. Using specialised magnification, I am able to examine the ear canal in detail and will then use a fine sterile suction device to remove the wax.

ABOUT EARWAX

 

Ear wax is a natural antibacterial and lubricating material produced by the sebaceous glands within the ear canal.We all produce different amounts and types of ear wax. This can be genetically predetermined. Some of us have smaller ear canals, or they are shaped in such a way that a build up and hardening of the wax can occur. Wearing a hearing aid can also leave an individual prone to a build of wax. This impacted wax can cause a plug, leading to hearing loss, pain, itching or tinnitus.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Microsuction is a superior method to remove ear wax when compared to more traditional forms of ear wax removal (ear syringing, irrigation or ear drops). Microsuction is SAFER, FASTER, MORE EFFECTIVE and BETTER TOLERATED than these methods.

Prior to microsuction, the best preparation is to use a clinically treated olive oil spray (EAROL) for 1-2 days beforehand. It is not necessary to use this for weeks beforehand, unlike the pre-treatment required before irrigation.  Other sprays or drops are not always suitable and may prevent us from being able to carry out the procedure.

I will firstly obtain a comprehensive history of your ear complaint and any previous problems with your ears. I will then examine your ears with video otoscopy before using specialised magnification to examine the ear canal in fine detail. If wax is present, I will use a fine sterile suction device to remove the wax under low pressure. It is normal to feel a gentle pulling sensation as the wax is removed and to hear crackling/squeaking as the suction removes the wax.

The microsuction appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.

Please note that in the case of severely impacted wax, further visits may be required which are chargeable.
